Our day is the best way to explore the highest mountains of the island with traditional villages, caves, plateaus, rolling vineyards, mythology and the local life here in Crete. Starting our journey from Gazi we head straight off road along the river bed to the picturesque village of Pendamodi, for a short stop to see the quaint church and natural spring. We wind our way through the vineyards of the largest wine producing area on the island to the village of Krousonas where we have the opportunity to taste local produce such as Olive Oil and Raki. Here we have free time for a coffee to relax and enjoy the stunning views.
Continuing our journey towards Livadi Plateau we see some of the many apple orchards in the area and no doubt meet some friendly local goats. As we head to our next stop of the Nida Plateau the highest point of our day, with views of the highest mountain ‘Psiloritis’ which is capped with snow most of the year. You will hear tales of the Resistance and Crete’s chequered history with a visit a very unusual monument and a traditional Shepherds ‘mitato’ where you can experience the traditional way of cheese making. Our next highlight is a visit to the Ideon Andron cave, where mythology states that Zeus took refuge here and escaped death.
Now for lunch! A delicious meal consisting of starters and a traditional main course from the oven (vegetarian option available) all to be accompanied with unlimited local Cretan wine and bottled water and with views of the highest plateau on the island. Once refreshed we continue our journey through the village of Anogeia for a short walk before we slowly make our journey back we have amazing photo opportunities with views over Heraklion and Almiros Gorge, from here we even see the ancient palace of Knossos in the distance. This day is packed full of amazing photo opportunities with excitement second to none. You certainly won’t forget your fun day out on our Great Adventure!
